Slums

The world of slums, like everything I suppose, is a lot more complicated than one might think at first thought. There are government sponsored slums, illegal slums, slums whose narrow asphalt paths wind around tidy shacks, slums whose tarped tent roofs creep right up to the train tracks - along with various other nuanced incarnations that I know nothing about.

A few weekends ago, my roommate and I went to judge a children's art contest hosted by one of our friends in the slum he lives in. Afterwards we were given the grand tour and the chance to meet some of his neighbors.

This slum has spread all the way to the train tracks.

A whole community of people living right on the tracks.

Rails with a view.

Resting on a Sunday afternoon.

A Hindu temple next to the slum.

Introspection by the river.
